Simon John Tsiouris

Dr Simon Tsiouris is Assistant Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center and Assistant Attending in Infectious Diseases at the NewYork–Presbyterian and Harlem Hospitals. Dr Tsiouris' research interests include TB epidemiology, TB diagnostics, and TB/HIV operational research. He has conducted a latent TB infection survey of schoolchildren in a South African township and he has been involved in a similar survey of residents in a Peruvian Andes village. His work in South Africa also included the evaluation of the sensitivity of a TB-specific whole blood interferon-gamma release assay in patients with TB. Dr. Tsiouris is Deputy Director of the Clinical Unit at the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at the Mailman School of Public Health. The Clinical Unit provides technical assistance, clinical mentoring and programmatic assistance for the development and enhancement of clinical resources and clinical activities at sites receiving support from the International Center for AIDS Care & Treatment Programs in 10 sub-Saharan African nations. Dr Tsiouris is also Senior TB/HIV Technical Advisor at ICAP. In this role, he is currently involved in the design and implementation of targeted evaluations and operational research to better inform TB/HIV program development. Studies currently underway or being developed include: determining barriers to HIV testing among TB patients in Rwanda, studying the operating characteristics of TB screening questionnaires to improve case detection in HIV care and treatment programs in Mozambique, and examining best practices to integrate TB and HIV care and treatment in South Africa.
