Salim S. Abdool Karim

Professor of Clinical Epidemiology,  Mailman School of Public Health


Dr. Salim S. Abdool Karim is a clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist whose research interests are in microbicides and vaccines to prevent HIV infection, as well as implementing antiretroviral therapy in resource constrained settings. Dr. Abdool Karim is active in the HIV Prevention and HIV Vaccine Trials Networks and serves as co-chair of HIV vaccine trials. He is also principal investigator of the Fogarty sponsored Columbia University - South African AIDS training program. Published widely on infectious diseases, including AIDS, measles and hepatitis B, he co-edited the textbook that is used extensively to teach epidemiology in South Africa. Dr. Abdool Karim has been a member of several international AIDS conference scientific committees and, most recently, served as chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the first South African AIDS Conference, held in Durban in 2003.
