Rita Kukafka

Assistant Professor of Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

and:
Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics, College of Physicians and Surgeons

Dr. Rita Kukafka’s focus is to develop a program of research and training in Public Health Informatics. She has conducted research on representing perceptions and beliefs for purposes of creating computer mediated communications designed to influence changes in health behaviors and provider practices, and on how theory from the behavioral sciences can be applied to advance understanding and improve capacity to implement information technology systems into health care organizations. She has carried this research into the Harlem Health Promotion Center, which over the next five years will be investigating ways to tap the potential of the internet in general, and interactive health technology in particular, and to educate Harlem residents and motivate them to reduce risk-taking behaviors. Dr. Kukafka also works in HIV/AIDS research and is the developer of a web-based decision support system (HIVTIPS) to assist providers with the management of HAART regimens in HIV/AIDS and to provide patients with tailored communication to improve treatment adherence.
