Yuval Neria, PhD is an associate professor of Clinical Psychology at the Departments of Psychiatry and Epidemiology and a research scientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr Neria's interests include the mental health consequences of extreme traumatic events, with a particular focus on specific populations such as war veterans, POWs, and bereaved and minorities. He has authored more than 60 publications in the area of trauma related disorders including PTSD, depression, and bipolar illness. Dr. Neria is the lead editor of two books 9/11: mental health in the wake of terrorist attacks (Cambridge University Press, 2006) and The Mental Health Consequences of Disasters (Cambridge University Press, in press). His research projects have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) and a number of private foundations. Dr. Neria is the 2007 recipient of the Klerman NARSAD Award for outstanding Clinical Research (Honorable Mention). His experience in the field of trauma and loss led to his recruitment to Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute shortly after the attacks of September 11th, 2001. He has become Associate Director of the Trauma Studies and Services, created specifically to provide treatment and to conduct psychosocial and epidemiological research among individuals with PTSD and Grief reactions. Dr. Neria has authored numerous publications in the area of PTSD and is currently leading various research projects that are related to the aftermath of Sep 11, 2001 including a nation wide survey on Traumatic Grief in 9/11 victims and a longitudinal study in low income minority, primary care, patients in NYC affected by 9/11 attacks.
