Marita K. Murrman

Department of Sociomedical Sciences Practicum Director
Associate Clinical Professor of Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Marita Murrman teaches a required Health Promotion course on designing multi-level, evidence-based community interventions. Prior to her current position, Dr. Murrman was director for professional education at the CDC funded National TB Center at Harlem Hospital. In this capacity, she helped design, implement, and evaluate a two-year TB/HIV training program for medical residents and attending physicians, many of whom were international medical graduates. As a member of the Center’s community outreach team, Dr. Murrman helped design education and training programs for healthcare workers in drug and alcohol treatment centers throughout the Harlem community. She was instrumental in the development of adherence interventions for two ongoing NIH-funded studies conducted at Harlem Hospital Center including the Harlem Adherence with Treatment Study (HATS) and the Tuberculosis Partnership Alliance Study (TAPAS). Dr. Murrman developed the theoretical frameworks for the interventions as well as the process of operationalizing them in a clinical trial setting. More recently, Dr. Murrman and colleagues from the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery (SDOS) designed and helped establish an integrated on-site comprehensive primary oral health care clinic in Harlem to engage multiply diagnosed people with HIV/AIDS in care. She also helped to create and implement an innovative service learning curriculum in HIV/AIDS care for post and pre-doctoral students of the SDOS. For the past two years, Dr. Murrman has been a key member of the MTCT-Plus Initiative's curriculum design team where she focuses her efforts on helping develop training programs for health care workers in Africa.
