Michele G. Shedlin

Michele G. Shedlin, Ph.D., is the Charles T. & Shirley L. Leavell Professor of Health Sciences II and Senior Fellow, Hispanic Health Disparities Research Center at the University of Texas, El Paso. She is a medical anthropologist with U.S. and international experience in qualitative health research. Her work includes support to community-based organizations, policy institutions, governmental agencies, and the private sector in program design, evaluation, teaching, and training in qualitative research methodology. Her experience in Latin America and Africa, and with communities of color in the United States in MCH, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS have resulted in numerous publications, reports and educational resources. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator of two NIH-funded research projects on Hispanic immigrants and HIV risk (New York), and drug use and HIV risk (Nicaragua) and Co-Investigator of two NIH-funded studies of MSM and HIV risk behavior. Her recent publications report research on sociocultural factors affecting drug use and HIV risk in El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Mexican, Dominican and Central American immigrant groups in the United States.
