Joseph H. Lee

Associate Professor of Epidemiology (in the Sergievsky Center),  Mailman School of Public Health

and:
The Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center, College of Physicians and Surgeons

Dr. Joseph H. Lee’s main focus of research is to identify genetic factors that contribute to Alzheimer Disease (AD) and aging. For this purpose, he applies statistical genetics methods to better understand how genetic and environmental factors influence AD and aging. Dr. Lee and his colleagues are currently working to identify potential AD susceptibility genes, using over 200 multi-generational Caribbean Hispanic families with multiple affected family members. To further dissect AD, they are examining genetic contributions to intermediate risk factor phenotypes for AD, such as decline in memory and other neuro-cognitive functions. By studying pre-clinical phenotypes that are predictors of AD, he and his colleagues may be able to better understand genetic contributions to the natural history of AD. They are currently working to incorporate amyloid ß and telomere as additional phenotypes. He is also involved in a multi-center study to understand familial components that led to exceptional longevity by examining a large number of families where multiple family members live to 95 of age or older. Lastly, Dr. Lee is recruiting ethnic Korean families in Kazakhstan and in the US to understand genetic and environmental factors that influence normal variations in aging traits.
