In his current position, Dr. Smith provides strategic, technical and managerial leadership to FHI’s efforts to expand and accelerate the uptake of evidence-based practices into reproductive health service delivery programs. Dr. Smith’s recent maternal health work involves use of UN Process Indicators to evaluate emergency obstetric care program implementation, evaluation of a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) training and re-conceptualization of TBA roles in their transition to skilled attendance at delivery, and descriptive epidemiology of maternal morbidity in low resources settings. During his two decades of research and program experience, Dr. Smith has authored over 40 publications on sexual and reproductive health topics and has served as a consultant to a variety of public health agencies, including the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institutes of Health.
