Guohua Li

Professor of Epidemiology, Mailman School of Public Health

and:
Professor of Anesthesiology, College of Physicians and Surgeons (home dept.)

Dr. Guohua Li’s expertise is in the area of injury epidemiology and prevention. He has studied the role of alcohol in injury causation and trauma outcomes, and is well known for his work on medical and human factors in aviation crashes. Dr. Li is interested in population-based, injury-related, and policy-oriented studies that encompass innovative methodology, novel epidemiologic and biostatistical techniques, and complex data systems. Currently, he directs two NIH-funded research projects: a longitudinal study of injury risk during the process of aging and a case-control study assessing the safety benefit of mandatory alcohol testing programs among employees with safety-sensitive functions. As the M. Finster Chair in Anesthesiology and Epidemiology, Dr. Li directs the clinical research program for perioperative care and critical care. Areas of interest include developing practical tools for measuring anesthesia-related risks, identifying and intervening on risk factors for adverse clinical outcomes, and evaluating the long-term effects of exposure to volatile anesthetics on neurodevelopment and cognitive functions in vulnerable patient groups, such as young children, the elderly, and people with major co-morbidities.
