Gary A. Heiman

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Epidemiology,  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Heiman's primary research interest is in the intersection between genetics, psychiatry, and neurology. He is the principal investigator on a study investigating the genetic relationship between epilepsy and depression and is the director of the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome Sharing Repository (http://tourette-repository.org/); a cell and DNA repository for Tourette Syndrome and associated disorders. He was the co-principal investigator on a study investigating the psychiatric manifestations of the DYT1 dystonia gene. Dr. Heiman also used computer simulations to investigate the extent to which population stratification affects case-control genetic association studies and has been involved in a study on the familial nature of drug and alcohol dependence using data from a large, representative sample.

He is coordinator and on the leadership council member of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA); an organization devoted to the scientific investigation of disordered human behavior, and its biological and psychosocial substrates (http://www.appassn.org/). He is also the chair of the Columbia University Seminar in Genetic Epidemiology (http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/sph/epi/GenEpiSeminars/), whose purpose is to bring together various researchers in human genetics, epidemiology, and related disciplines, to discuss issues of common interest including genetic and environmental contributions to disease, and gene-environment interaction.
