Frederica P. Perera

Professor of Environmental Health Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

and:
Director, Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health

Frederica P. Perera, DrPH, is professor of Environmental Health Science; and serves as director, Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health; and program director, Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. A pioneer in the field of molecular epidemiology, she is internationally recognized for her research on environmental causes of cancer and developmental disorders, including the effects of ambient air pollution, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and pesticides on health outcomes in children and adults. The modulation of their risk by genetic and non-genetic susceptibility factors, which includes genetic polymorphisms, nutritional and health impairment, young age, ethnicity, and gender, has been a specific and major focus of her research. Dr. Perera’s work has helped elucidate the underlying causes of interindividual variation in risk of cancer and other serious diseases.
