Elizabeth Needham Waddell

Lecturer of Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Waddell's research focuses on health disparities based on race, gender, and ethnic origin within New York City. She is presently City Research Scientist and Family Planning Research Coordinator at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and teaches Qualitative Analysis on an adjunct basis. Her postdoctoral work at the National Development and Research Institute and Columbia's Center for Applied Public Health involved both field research and quantitative analysis aimed at understanding the relationship between social stigma and access to care among persons living with HIV. Her most recent research concerns women's health, including unintended pregnancy, nutrition, and intimate partner violence. As Family Planning Research Coordinator for New York City, Dr. Waddell is working to improve surveillance of women’s health service utilization and barriers to care, particularly within underserved communities within Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Specific goals include developing a better understanding of factors related to unintended pregnancies, and developing evidenced based intervention programs to reduce unintended pregnancies among both teens and adult women in New York City’s most high risk neighborhoods.
