Daniel C. Barth-Jones

Assistant Professor of Clinical Epidemiology,  Mailman School of Public Health


Dr. Daniel Barth-Jones is an HIV and infectious disease epidemiologist who specializes in computer simulation of the HIV epidemic and the transmission and public health control of HIV and infectious diseases. His primary research interests include the epidemiology of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, theoretical population vaccinology, Phase III HIV vaccine trial design, and health economic evaluations of public health policies for vaccination and preventative intervention programs. Dr. Barth-Jones also maintains an active research agenda in the area of statistical disclosure analyses and statistical disclosure control, developing statistical and geospatial methodologies to help assure the confidentiality and privacy of de-identified healthcare data for compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Rule. His ongoing research in HIV vaccine modeling and HIV vaccination strategy/policy development has been sponsored by the U.S. CDC, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and the World Health Organization, and is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministries of Health in China, Brazil, Peru, Kenya and Thailand. Dr. Barth-Jones is a frequent advisor to the WHO, UNAIDS, and IAVI, and a participating member of the WHO/UNAIDS Reference Group on Estimates, Models, & Projections, which is the WHO/UNAIDS advisory body regarding the epidemiologic methods used for producing their global estimates for the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
