Carol Kunzel

Associate Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health

and:
Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry (Community Health), School of Dental and Oral Surgery (home dept.)

Dr. Carol Kunzel has been co-principal investigator on NIH-funded grants for approximately 20 years, during which time she has had extensive experience with the development of telephone and mail surveys for national, New York State, and New York City samples of dentist practitioners. These survey research projects involve the measurement of dentists' attitudes, knowledge, clinical behaviors and adherence to practice guidelines, the identification of influential predictors associated with each, and the measurement of and identification of factors associated with dentists’ willingness to treat HIV+ patients. The focus of this work has broadened, since 1997, to include dentists’ willingness to treat those at risk, defined as patients with infectious diseases, including HIV infection, as well as hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Dr. Kunzel’s research on dentists’ adherence to established practice guidelines led to the development of a model of knowledge acquisition based on dentists’ adherence to American Heart Association recommendations.
