Barron H. Lerner

Dr. Barron H. Lerner is the Angelica Berrie-Gold Foundation associate professor of Medicine and Public Health at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Mailman School of Public Health. His latest book, "The Breast Cancer Wars: Hope, Fear and the Pursuit of a Cure in Twentieth-Century America," published by Oxford University Press, received a Washington Irving Book Award from the Westchester Library Association and was named one of the 26 most notable books of 2001 by the American Library Association. An updated paperback edition was issued in April 2003. Dr. Lerner has published extensively in scholarly journals as well as The New York Times, The Washington Post and other newspapers. He has also appeared on National Public Radio programs, including "Fresh Air" and "Science Friday." Dr. Lerner's current research project, "Patient Activists: N of 1 Cases and Health Policy Debates," is being funded through the Investigators in Health Policy program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In addition to his research, Dr. Lerner practices internal medicine and teaches medical ethics and the history of medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
