OTHER INFORMATION = This course offers an overview of theoretical and research issues in the psychological study of health and illness. The course emphasizes theoretical perspectives in the psychology of health, illness prevention, stress, and coping with illness; and highlights research, methods, and applied issues. The course provides an overview and synthesis of the fields of health psychology and behavioral medicine and demonstrates how theories and methods from these fields can be applied to understand and address a variety of topics in public health. Course unit topics are organized by particular themes including: health cognition and risk perception; stress and illness; social support and health; coping with chronic illness; social identity theory, health, and illness; patient-physician interactions; religiosity and health; and psychological well-being. |
