OTHER INFORMATION = This course provides insight in global issues of health, health care and the politics of health policy. The course starts with a brief introduction of analytical tools to study processes of change and non-change in health care. Next, the course takes up the issue of international comparison, from both a theoretical and applied perspective. It looks at recent changes in the funding, contracting and governance arrangements in the industrialized world and developing countries. While there is similarity in underlying principles and problems in health care across nations, social policy makers face country-specific circumstances of institutional and cultural legacies that restrain the choice of policy options. The general analytical tools will apply to a selection of specific topics, like manpower in health care, decentralization, information technology and pharmaceutical policy.
