OTHER INFORMATION = This course satisfies the Sociomedical Sciences core requirement for the M.P.H. degree. It demonstrates how social science theories and methods can be applied to selected topics in public health. Upon completion, students are able to: (1) discuss major theoretical perspectives in the social sciencs and explain how they apply to various public health issues and problems; (2) describe social, behavioral, cultural, and historical factors that contribute to health; (3) discuss the importance of the social sciences in the prevention and management of public health problems; and (4) apply social science theory in the implementation or evaluation of public promotion and disease prevention, AIDS, social inequalities, race and racism, health disparities across various ethnic groups, social networks and personal resources, and mental health.
