Research interests

Background:
Born and raised in the north woods of Minnesota, following a bachelor's degree in music and literature I obtained a PhD from New York University in social psychology. Virtually my whole professional career following that has been at New York State Psychiatric Institute, where I am Principal Research Scientist in the Department of Epidemiology of Mental Disorders and Columbia University, where I am Professor of Clinical Public Health (Epidemiology) in Psychiatry. I have been Co-Director of the Psychiatric Epidemiology Program since 1980. I have been active in methodological developments in the social sciences, and was awarded the Cattell Award for Young Multivariate Researcher by the Society for Multivariate Experimental Psychology, and in 1994 was President of that society. My best known work is the text and handbook "Multiple Regression/Correlation for the Behavioral Sciences" written with my late husband Jacob Cohen. The third edition of this book is in press.

In addition to an ongoing interest in methodological issues, much of my work over the past 20 years has focused on the Children in the Community longitudinal study of which I am Principal Investigator. This study accounts for about half of my approximately 200 publications. My current substantive interests are in the areas of developmental psychopathology, social epidemiology, and links between basic research and public policy. My current methodological interests include multilevel extensions of regression techniques, reliable and valid narrative interviews, and issues related to the timing of causal effects.
