Untitled Dr. Anthony Fauci 2002 Commencement Speaker

Anthony Fauci, MD, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, was the Mailman Schools 2002 Commencement speaker on May 22.

Dr. Fauci has made many contributions to basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis and treatment of immune-mediated diseases. He pioneered the field of immunoregulation through observations that currently serve as the basis for understanding the regulation of the human immune response. He developed effective therapies for several formerly fatal diseases.

He has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how the AIDS virus destroys the bodys defenses, leaving a person susceptible to deadly infections, and has been instrumental in developing strategies for therapies and immune reconstitution in HIV/AIDS patients.

Most recently, Dr. Fauci has been involved at the forefront of the investigation into the anthrax-laced letters mailed to several locations in the country. He has testified before the Senate about the countrys need to strengthen the public health system in light of the possibility of a bioterrorist attack, especially in the areas of vaccines, treatments, and laboratory facilities.
