Jeffrey D. Sachs, currently at Harvard, will join Columbia as director of the Earth Institute and with appointments in three of the Universitys schools: the Mailman School of Public Healths Department of Health Policy and Management; the School of International and Public Affairs; and Arts and Sciences Department of Economics.
Sachs serves as an economic advisor to governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia, and Africa, as well as to the United Nations, where he prepared a millennium report outlining the economic rationale for investment in global health issues.
"We are very excited that Dr. Sachs is joining the Mailman School," stated Allan Rosenfield, MD, dean of the Mailman School. "His reputation globally on issues that are central to the Mailman Schools mission is extraordinary. Dr. Sachs work will further develop our collaborative efforts around the University."
Sachs involvement at the Mailman School will include global HIV/AIDS initiatives, as well as issues surrounding poverty, reproductive health, human rights, maternal mortality, and environmental health.
