William C. L. Stewart

Assistant Professor of Biostatistics,  Mailman School of Public Health

William Stewart, PhD, develops methods that combine statistical and population genetics to help researchers find functional genetic variants underlying complex diseases. Dr. Stewart's expertise lies in modeling complicated data sets that typically arise when genetic and phenotypic observations are collected on members of large, extended families. He has authored and co-authored computer programs that are used to construct accurate, high-resolution maps of the human genome, and to identify novel genetic variants that may confer increased risk to bipolar disorder. Dr. Stewart is interested in the etiologies of bipolar disorder and epilepsy, but his past and present gene mapping projects also include hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes. Dr. Stewart also has an interest in the analysis of copy number variants--genetic differences that are known to influence gene expression in general, and to affect risk for autism and schizophrenia in particular.
