Vincent Michael Bernard Silenzio

Assistant Professor of Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

A medical ethnographer, educator, and practicing family physician, Dr. Vincent M. B. Silenzio is a national leader in family medicine education and in the area of sexual minority health. He is interested in the relationships between violence, discrimination, and suicide in sexual minority populations, and in the role of primary care clinicians in suicide prevention and community mental health, particularly during adolescence. Dr. Silenzio’s research in the area of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health has also focused upon the influence of sociocultural variation in same-sex sexual expression among ethnic, racial, and other social groups in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Silenzio is a founding member of the Program in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Research in the Center for Sexuality, Gender and Health at the Mailman School. He served until recently as a member of the board of directors of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and as co-editor-in-chief of the Association’s journal. He was coauthor and editor of the White Paper on LGBT Health for the Department of Health and Human Services that became the basis for the first-ever companion document on LGBT Health as part of the Healthy People 2010 report. He holds joint appointments in the departments of Family Medicine and Community Medicine at the University of Rochester, and the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School.
