Susan Harlap

Professor of Clinical Epidemiology,  Mailman School of Public Health

After working as a family physician in inner-city London, Dr. Susan Harlap relocated to Israel where, from 1967-88, she served on the faculty of Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, working on the Jerusalem Perinatal Study and conducting research in reproduction and women's public health. Focusing on the long-term safety of methods of birth control, especially oral contraceptives, she has been a frequent consultant or temporary advisor to the World Health Organization. Since moving to the U.S., she collaborated with Family Health International, NC (1988) and the Alan Guttmacher Institute, NY (1989); and held posts as chief of the Epidemiology Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (1990-97) and research professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine (1997-03). Her current research, in collaboration with other Israeli and U.S. scientists, follows mortality, cancer incidence and psychiatric disease in a large population of families in Israel.
