Patricia E. Thompson-Reid

Assistant Clinical Professor of Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

Ms. Thompson-Reid’s focus is in the area of international health and the development of health systems, particularly in primary health care programs in developing countries, in addition to the various strategies for the implementation of health promotion activities at the community level. Early in her career, Ms. Thompson-Reid was a project director for a pilot HEW program for the prevention of teenage pregnancy. She later served as chief health planner at the Jamaican Ministry of Health, culminating in a position with the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health organization (PAHO/WHO). Upon returning to the United States, she worked with the Morehouse School of Medicine as a program coordinator/curriculum specialist in the Health Promotion Resource Center. In this capacity, she worked as a community organizer in the Joyland Highpoint Community, and was successful in the development and implementation of the curriculum for the training and development of 18 coalitions as part of the Jim Alley Training Program throughout the state of Georgia. She later joined the Division of Diabetes Translation, at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion where she now serves as a community interventionist/program development consultant. Ms. Thompson-Reid developed and implemented the Diabetes Today program, a framework for the planning and development of community based programs for persons with diabetes, and trained over 200 professionals nationwide. Recently Ms. Thompson-Reid co-edited the Monograph Diabetes and Women’s Health Across the Life Stages: A Public Health Perspective and served as team leader for the Women’s Health Initiative.
