Herman M. Ellis

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Ellis has occupational medicine experience at IBM, Monsanto and was corporate medical director of Rohm and Haas, a Fortune 500 specialty chemical company in Philadelphia. Dr. Ellis achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy with his active duty spent as Chief of Epidemiology for the Atlantic Fleet. He has been a faculty member at Northeastern University, St. Louis University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and was Chair of Occupational and Preventive Medicine as well as director of the MSPH Program in Health Services Administration at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He is presently on the medical school faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Ellis was New Jersey's State Epidemiologist and an Assistant Commissioner for one year. Dr. Ellis' areas of interest are workers compensation determination related to chemical exposure, seat belt safety (co-chaired USDOT Blue Ribbon Panel to increase seat belt use among African Americans), and nutritional supplementation. He also considers himself an expert in the delivery of public health services and now is the medical director of Delaware's Division of Public Health.
