Cheryl R. Merzel

Assistant Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health


Dr. Cheryl Merzel’s research focuses on community-based health promotion and access to health services among low-income and underserved populations. She has extensive experience in research and evaluation of community health programs. Current research interests include examining the impact of public health programs on community capacity and the processes involved. She is the principal investigator of Downstate New York Healthy Start, a community-based maternal and child health program, and recently served as a co-investigator on several Harlem-based projects including an STD prevention intervention, a project assessing the community’s capacity for tobacco control, and an evaluation of an HIV medication adherence program. Dr. Merzel has published in the areas of factors influencing access to health services among urban populations, academic-community partnerships, and the effectiveness of community-based health promotion programs. Dr. Merzel is an instructor and advisor in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences’ MPH program in Health Promotion and is co-coordinator of the Department’s DrPH program. Dr. Merzel is active in New York City public health policy through her participation on the board and past presidency of the Public Health Association of NYC and several advisory committees to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
