Assistant Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Sheindy Pretter is part of a research group at the Center for the Psychosocial Study of Health and Illness, within the Department of Sociomedical Sciences. She is engaged in a comprehensive program of research to inform program development and supportive services directed towards the family care unit. Her work focuses on the psychological, social, spiritual, and practical issues facing caregiving family members of individuals who are chronically and/or seriously ill. Dr. Pretter's key research interests concern health psychology, which include coping with the stress of illness; aging and public health; familial caregiving in chronic illness; post-traumatic growth; and women's health issues. She is currently project director of a study examining the psychosocial impact of the breast cancer experience on caregiving family members who are themselves at increased risk for developing breast cancer. Dr. Pretter is also project director of a study which focuses on providing supportive care for seriously ill older adults and their families. The study incorporates a psychoeducational support program for elderly community residents in the Washington Heights area who are involved in caring for a dying spouse. In addition to her research, activities Dr. Pretter is a faculty member of the aging track in the MPH program, co-teaching "Social Dimensions of Aging" and "Caregiving for the Chronically Ill."
