Victor B. Penchaszadeh

Professor of Clinical Epidemiology,  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr.Victor Penchaszadeh graduated as a physician in his native Argentina and completed postgraduate training in pediatrics (Children’s Hospital of Buenos Aires), epidemiology, public health and human genetics (Johns Hopkins University) and bioethics (Columbia University). After being forced to leave Argentina by the military dictatorship, he moved to Venezuela and later settled in the U.S., where he has worked in the provision of genetic services and the epidemiology of genetic and congenital conditions. Dr. Penchaszadeh is involved internationally in the prevention of birth defects, the delivery of genetic services and the ethical, legal and social implications of human genetics. Working with the World Health Organization and other international organizations, he has promoted innovative approaches to improve access to health care for genetic conditions by underserved populations in several countries, including Latinos in the U.S. As part of his human rights activism, Dr. Penchaszadeh has championed the use of genetic technologies for the identification of victims of human rights violations worldwide, particularly in Argentina. His current work relates to the setting of priorities for health research in developing countries, the ethics of international biomedical research and making certain that genetic technologies in health care are applied safely, effectively and equitably while respecting human dignity and the right to health. He is currently developing a school-wide teaching program in public health genetics.
