Mohammad Nizamuddin

Clinical Professor of Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health


Dr. Mohammed Nizamuddin’s interests focus on issues of population and development, including aging, poverty, and demographic data of developing countries, especially in Asia (including the Central Asian Republics), Africa, and the Middle East. He has been working on global population, as well as health and aging issues for 30 years. Dr. Nizamuddin serves as the principal investigator of an international project on Population Aging in Developing Countries funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) New York. This project focuses on capacity building in population aging policies and programs in developing countries through training and field research. Currently, field studies are underway in India and Pakistan, and two training workshops have been conducted for 16 developing countries. Prior to joining the faculty of the Mailman School, Dr. Nizamuddin served the United Nation’s system for over 23 years in high level positions involving technical, managerial, and representational duties, both in New York and in several developing countries. Earlier, as the national director for the Pakistan Fertility Survey (1976) as part of the World Fertility Survey (WFS), he designed and conducted a household survey of 6000 women, and trained and supervised a field team of 75, for data processing, analysis, and report writing. Dr. Nizamuddin has co-authored over two dozen books, reports, and technical papers, published under the auspices of the United Nations.
