and:
Director, National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP)

Dr. Jane Knitzer's work focuses on understanding how public policies can improve outcomes for children and families, especially those in low-income brackets. She is a psychologist whose career has been spent in policy research and analysis of issues affecting children and families, including mental health, child welfare, and early childhood. Dr. Knitzer has been on the faculty at Cornell University, New York University and Bank Street College for Education. Prior to that, she worked for many years at the Children's Defense Fund. Currently, her work focuses on broad efforts to improve cognitive and social and emotional school readiness outcomes, especially for children affected by multiple risk factors. Dr. Knitzer also is continuing her research on the adequacy of public policies for children and youth with emotional and behavioral problems and is the author of its series on Promoting the Emotional Well-being of Children and Families. As director of the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP), she initiated their signature map and track series examining variation across the 50 states in early childhood policies. Dr. Knitzer is a frequent speaker to help policymakers and practitioners understand and take action on lessons learned from research for policy and practice.
