Elyse Olshen Kharbanda

Dr. Olshen’s research interests include adolescent suicidality, adolescent immunizations, and the use of postexposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV. Dr. Olshen is involved in ongoing research utilizing the NYC Youth Risk Behavior Survey to characterize the relationship between adolescent suicide attempts and violence victimization. Dr. Olshen has also completed two independent research projects related to adolescent immunization. Dr. Olshen conducted focus groups to qualitatively evaluate parental views on the HPV vaccine, her findings were published in the Journal of Adolescent Health in 2005. With the support of the 2005 Centers for Disease Control/Society of Adolescent Medicine Immunization Small Grant, Dr. Olshen analyzed policies that impact state level variation in adolescent immunization rates. Results of this research have been presented at national meetings and are awaiting publication. Dr. Olshen is a member of the Society of Adolescent Medicine’s Ad Hoc Committee on Immunization. Dr. Olshen conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize the use of HIV postexposure prophylaxis in adolescent sexual assault victims. Results of this research were published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
