Sheila M. Rothman

Professor of Sociomedical Sciences (in the Center for the Study of Society and Medicine),  Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Sheila Rothman's research focuses on the links between technologies and individual and group identity. One area of particular interest is the impact of genetic knowledge of group identity. She is principal investigator on "A Paradox of Genetic Research: Race, Ethnicity and Disease (NIH 2003-2006). Dr. Rothman recently received a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Investigator Award to study the policy implications of the growing reliance on live organ donors. Her most recent book co-authored with David Rothman is The Pursuit of Perfection: The Promise and Perils of Medical Enhancement (2003). Using historical and contemporary sources it examines the development, promotion, and use of a range of hormonal therapies as well as the promise and current development of genetic technologies.
