Gary W. Dowsett

Associate Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences,  Mailman School of Public Health

As a sociologist, Dr. Gary Dowsett has long been interested in sexuality, particularly in relation to the rise of modern gay communities. Since 1986, he has been researching the nature and impact of the HIV epidemic on Australia's gay communities. Over the last 13 years, Dr. Dowsett has also worked as a consultant to WHO's Global Programme on AIDS in Geneva, as an adviser to the United Nations Development Programm, and the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS). His international work includes a number of consultancies and research studies, most recently focused in the Asia-Pacific region, and he has developed a number of training programs in community-based research and qualitative research design. The author, co-author, or editor of five books, 23 book chapters and over 30 academic articles, his most well-known book is Practicing Desire: Homosexual Sex in the Era of AIDS, published by Stanford University Press. Prior to joining the Mailman School faculty, Dr. Dowsett was associate professor and deputy director of the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia.

HV Prevention for New York Gay Men using the Intenet   
This project investigates the use of the Internet by gay men for recreational sex purposes and explores the potential of the Internet for HIV prevention education.


Selected Global Activities
A review of HIV issues among men who have sex with men in Asia   
This review was conducted for Family Health International with colleagues based at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. The review involved published academic and 'gray' literature in English and the local languages, with a view to assessing the group vulnerability of MSM populations to HIV infection.
