Reaching Out to Africa: A Weekend of Medicine and Humanity at P&S; Alumni Reunion 2009 From Broadway to Botswana, Columbia is reaching out to help. P&S; Alumni Reunion 2009, May 15-16, 2009, will highlight efforts of alumni, health sciences faculty and students to make a difference in Africa. Among the presenters at the Dean�s Day Program titled �Columbia in Africa,� on Saturday, May 16, will be moderator Jay A. Levy (P&S; �65), one of the first to identify HIV and a key player in the search for a cure, and MacArthur Fellow
Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, a global leader in treatment modalities for HIV and TB. The weekend events will begin on Friday, May 15, with the Alumni Day Scientific Session, at which selected members of five-year anniversary classes will present their research. Continuing Medical Education Credit will be offered. The Dean�s Day Program on Saturday, May 16, will include performances on an African theme by Bard Hall Players and presentations by physicians involved in international health, including Al Ruenes (P&D; �88), a urologist working in sub-Saharan Africa, Natalia Kanem (P&S; �80) and Nancy Anderson (P&S; �80), both involved in promoting pediatric health care delivery in Southern Africa, and Mpiko Ntsekhe (P&S; �94), a cardiologist based in Capetown, South Africa, who will offer an African perspective on the care of HIV and the cardiovascular system. Abby Chiverton (P&S; �09) a current student will discuss her recent excursion to Ethiopia. Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, director of the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs at the Mailman School of Public Health, will deliver the keynote address on new models of heath care delivery for tackling the HIV epidemic. Both programs will be held in the P&S; Alumni Auditorium, on the Health Sciences Campus, and are open to the public.
