In November, Lee Goldman, MD, MPH, executive vice president for Health and Biomedical Sciences at Columbia University Medical Center and professor of Epidemiology, participated in the opening of the newly renovated HIV/Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Clinic at Bishoftu Public Hospital in Oromia State, Ethiopia. The facility, whose renovation and ongoing activities have been supported by the Mailman School's International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), provides comprehensive HIV services to more than 2,400 people, including ART to 942 people.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Felicia Stewart and her vision, commitment, leadership, and advocacy in the field.

As reported in At the Frontline, six teams of students from the Mailman School, College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the schools of Business, and Public and International Affairs participated in the Inaugural Healthcare and Hospital Management Challenge in early November. The Challenge, which was sponsored by the Department of Health Policy and Management in conjunction with the Columbia Alliance for Healthcare Management, provided the teams the opportunity to test their consulting skills in analysis and communication while competing for cash prizes and the right to chant, "We're Number One!" A panel of expert judges from industry and academia challenged the teams' analyses, tested their reasoning, dissected their recommendations, and ultimately, selected the winners.

Daniel J. Fink, MD, MPH ’80, associate clinical professor of Pathology at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, died unexpectedly on November 27. A cherished faculty member for 28 years, Dr. Fink spent his entire career at Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian.

With an essay entitled, "The Contentious History of Homelessness and Mental Illness in New York City: An Analysis of Interviews," Sociomedical Sciences student Marian Jones garnered the 2007 New York Academy of Medicine Student Essay Prize in the History of Medicine and Public Health. Said Christian Warren, PhD, a member of NYAM's review committee, "Ms. Jones' essay was one of 20 submissions we received this year. There were 11 strong semi-finalists from programs around the country-from Tulane to Hopkins to Harvard. In the end, after a very close vote, we all agreed Ms. Jones' paper stood out above the rest."
