Ginger L. Chew Appointed to NY State Toxic Mold Taskforce In 2005, New York State passed a law to establish a taskforce targeting indoor toxins that pose an unacceptable risk to the population’s health and the environment. As an expert researcher on mold exposure assessment, Ginger L. Chew, ScD, assistant professor of Environmental Health Sciences, was tapped to join the Taskforce and attended its first meeting in Albany this month. According to Dr. Chew, the group met to discuss the nature and scope of health risks associated with mold (some of which can produce toxins), and to develop a plan of action moving forward. At this time, the goals of the group are to assess the latest scientific data on exposure limits to mold in indoor environments; determine methods for the control of mold in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner; and finally, to determine what, if any, further actions be taken by the legislature or state agencies to address this problem. “Although the taskforce is in its infancy,” says Dr. Chew, “I am encouraged by the enthusiastic determination of the group to tackle this very serious public health problem.” According to Dr. Chew, the next meeting will take place in early 2008.
