Scientists Discover New Virus Responsible for Deaths of Three Transplant Recipients from Single Donor in Victoria, Australia
Scientists in the Jerome L. and Dawn Greene Infectious Disease Laboratory at the Mailman School and colleagues in the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia and 454 Life Sciences have discovered a new virus that was responsible for the deaths of three transplant recipients who received organs from a single donor in Victoria, Australia.

New Mailman School Study Shows Inevitability of Men's Infidelity Across Cultures
For a growing number of women in rural Mexico—and around the world—marital sex represents their single greatest risk for HIV infection. According to a new Mailman School Study, because marital infidelity by men is so deeply ingrained across many cultures, existing HIV prevention programs are putting a growing number of women at risk of developing the HIV virus. The findings, indicating that globally, prevention programs that take a “just say no” approach and encourage men to be monogamous are unlikely to be effective, underline the need for programs that make extramarital sex safer, rather than—unrealistically—trying to eradicate it.

March 2007 marked the inauguration of the Center for the Study of Social Inequalities and Health (Inequalities Center) at the Mailman School of Public Health. Situated in the Departments of Epidemiology and Sociomedial Sciences, the Inequalities Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration of researchers dedicated to understanding and addressing connections between social inequalities and health.

Ruth Fischbach Elected to American Association for the Advancement of Science's Section on Societal Impact of Science and Engineering
Ruth L. Fischbach, PhD, professor of Bioethics in Sociomedical Sciences, has been elected to a four-year term as a member-at-large of the Section on Societal Impact of Science and Engineering at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

William T. Friedewald Elected as a First Fellow in the Society of Clinical Trials
William T. Friedewald, MD, clinical professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, was recently elected as one of the first fellows of the Society of Clinical Trials. Created in 1978, the Society is an international professional organization dedicated to the development and dissemination of knowledge about the design, conduct and analysis of government and industry-sponsored clinical trials and related health care research methodologies.

Three Mailman Professors Lauded for Dynamic Teaching Skills and Innovative Coursework
Linda F. Cushman, PhD, associate clinical professor of Population and Family Health, is being recognized this year for her deep commitment to teaching with two prestigious awards. On the Road to Good Health at the Mailman School’s 2007 Alumni Conference
The Mailman School’s 2007 Alumni Conference, attended by more than 100 graduates of the School, was held on April 25 at Pfizer’s World headquarters in New York City. This year’s theme, “Can the Road to Good Health be Legislated, Regulated, or Adjudicated?” was especially timely, addressing some of the public health issues currently playing out in cities across the nation. Executive Vice Dean Andrew Davidson welcomed the audience and introduced Barbara DeBuono, MD, MPH, senior medical advisor, Pfizer Public Health and Policy Group. New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, MD, and Mailman School alumnus (MPH ’86), above, presented this year’s keynote address, “Local Public Health Agencies: Waking Up to the Challenge of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control,” in which he offered his perspective on safeguarding the public’s health.

Hala Al-Saraf Receives the Institute of International Education’s New Leaders Group Award for Mutual Understanding
Each year, the Institute of International Education (IIE) recognizes a Fulbright student whose work promotes mutual understanding between the U.S. and another country. This year, IIE selected Mailman School student and Iraqi national Hala Al-Saraf for her project “THINK,” an interactive, online, distance-learning forum for Iraqi and U.S. medical students.
