Dear Friends: I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the incredible outpouring of support I have received since announcing several months ago the situation with my health, and my request to Columbia President Lee Bollinger this spring to initiate a search for a new Dean of the Mailman School. The encouraging words I've received from friends, family, students, and colleagues at the School and beyond have been tremendously uplifting and I thank you all. I am especially thankful to Lee Bollinger for the tribute dinner and special World Leaders Forum he hosted in my honor in June. Both events provided me with some of the most memorable and touching moments of my life, and for that I am deeply grateful. I am also moved by the incredible generosity shown to the School on my behalf. In March, the School established a Friends of Allan Rosenfield Fund to support student financial aid, junior and minority faculty, the completion of the 115-seat amphitheater, and the development of new public health initiatives. I am pleased to report that, to date, over $315,000 has been raised to meet these needs. Also in March, Lee Bollinger announced at a breakfast for friends and supporters of the School the creation of a Tribute Fund in my honor to help complete renovations on the School. In this brief period of time, the fund has received commitments totaling more than $36 million-an incredible surge of support that will help bring us closer to our goal to create truly state-of-the-art facilities for public health research and education, matching the extraordinary caliber of the School's departments, centers, and programs. I would like to thank those who have so generously given to the Tribute Fund, particularly the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Columbia University, the Joseph L. Mailman Family, Mrs. Norma Hess, the Alfred and Gail Engelberg Foundation, Dr. Judith Sulzberger, the Heilbrunn family, and my friends in the Windham Group. As I consider the future of the Mailman School, words cannot express how honored and humbled I am that the Rosenfield name shall become a permanent part of the building at 722 W. 168th Street. I would like to thank the Trustees of the University for this magnanimous gesture as well. When I embarked on my career 40 years ago, I could never have imagined such a spectacular 20-year journey as Dean at the Mailman School of Public Health, working with a world-class faculty, a talented and dedicated staff, an outstanding student body, and supportive and successful alumni. As I work with University leadership on a smooth transition over the months ahead, I remain firmly committed to further strengthening this exceptional institution. Sincerely, |
