Course Description
P9400 Case studies in causal thinking for epidemiologists, 4 points
Prerequisites: P9485 and two substantive courses in epidemiology
One of the essential tasks practicing epidemiologists perform (whether in academic, government or private settings) is to critically review the literature. This culminating course in the PhD program will use the theories and methods learned in the prerequisites to evaluate bodies of literature, leading to an educated judgement regarding causality.
The class format is a seminar. For each session, two-three students will give 20-30 minute presentations on important and salient points in the reading. Although students are encouraged to work independently, some joint preparation is required to avoid repetition of the major points. The presentations provide the basis for the general class discussion. Each presentation should focus on issues in the controversy, rather than a summary of the literature. Each presenter should establish his/her position relative to the issues. Although the presenters are encouraged not to use visual aids, two or three slides are allowed to illustrate important points if necessary.
